 Learn to Skate

The Woonsocket North Stars are now in their 33rd season as the premiere youth hockey organization for the youth of Woonsocket, Cumberland, Lincoln, North Smithfield and nearby Massachusetts.

Program Overview:
The Learn To Skate program for the upcoming season will begin in late October and will run through March.  The sessions are held once a week on Saturdays from 8-9 AM at Adelard Arena at Mount St. Charles.  Our program is open to boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 9 years old.

The objective of the program is to teach and develop fundamental skating skills necessary to eventually play the game of hockey. The children will be divided into three groups based on skill level and as their skills improve, they will move through the curriculum;

*  Beginners – This group is intended for early skating development. Basic skills will be taught. Backward skating and crossovers will be introduced.
*  Intermediate – Skating skills such as glide turns, several stopping methods, backward skating, edge control, and transitions will be taught.
*  Advanced – Skating skills will be reinforced and basic hockey skating skills will be introduced as basic stick handling, shooting and passing will be provided.

Equipment Needed:
Proper equipment is essential in ensuring your child’s safety and enjoyment in the Learn to Skate Program. All skaters will need a hockey helmet with a cage, elbow pads, shin pads and a neck guard.  Hockey pants are also recommended. You can often find Learn to Skate packages at local sporting goods stores and hockey shops that include skates, shin pads and elbow pads. Some locations even offer packages that include bags, gloves and pants.
